Huawei P9 Plus – Latest Superb Smartphone from Huawei with Ground-Breaking Camera
Huawei also announced the P9 Plus alongside the P9. The P9 Plus is expected to be released this April 2016 and it comes with amazing new features, some of which are not present in the P9.
The P9 Plus is a high-end smartphone that can compete with flagships of other brands such as Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, iPhone 6s Plus, and LG G5. If you like phablets, the key areas that you should look into includes the design and display quality, performance, camera, and battery life.
With that said, let’s see the cool features of the P9 Plus.
Device Type: Smartphone
Display: 5.5 inches (1080 x 1920 pixels)
Camera: 12MP (1080p)
Hardware: HiSilicon Kirin 955, Quad-core 2.5 GHz + Quad-core 1.8 GHz, 4GB RAM
Battery: 3400 mAh
Expected Price: US$ 850
Metal and Glass Design plus AMOLED display
The P9 Plus has a metal uni-body and the 5.5-inch display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. If you are getting a new smartphone, you should consider a metallic build because it is more sturdy.
I like the Gorilla Glass 4 because it is twice more durable than other glass designs.
If you like lightweight smartphones, the P9 Plus is very light at only 162 g. If you want an idea on how light this smartphone is, its weight is close to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (157 g). I prefer sleek phones and the P9 Plus is super thin (7 mm). It is even thinner compared to the already super thin Galaxy S7 Edge (7.7 mm).
The P9 Plus comes with a stunning AMOLED display. AMOLED display is characterized by its vivid, realistic, and bright colors.
Like the Huawei P9, the P9 Plus has a Full HD display and the display size of the p9 Plus is larger. The display size of the P9 is 5.2 inches while the P9 Plus is 5.5 inches. The P9 Plus is perfect if you are like me who likes phablets. The same display size can also be found in the beautiful Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and iPhone 6s Plus.
It has a very sharp display due to its high pixel density (401 ppi). Compared to the iPhone with a 326 ppi pixel density, the P9 Plus is much sharper.
Another amazing feature of the P9 Plus is the “Press Touch”. This display feature is not available in the P9.
But what is “Press Touch”? If you’ve heard about Apple’s 3D Touch, well, the Press Touch has the same concept. It allows the display to detect variations in screen pressure. There are many interesting uses of this technology. For example, you can lightly press on a message to display the preview and you can hard press to display the entire message.
The P9 Plus comes in Haze Gold, Quartz Grey, Ceramic White color variants. Note that the P9 has more color options.
High-end Performance and Longer Battery Life
The P9 Plus has the same chipset, CPU speed, RAM, and GPU hardware as the P9. With its CPU and RAM, it can closely match the latest flagship smartphones such as LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
Since it has the same GPU with the P9, you should expect that it will be good, but not as excellent as the LG G5 and Galaxy S7 Edge when playing 3D games. This is based on recent graphics benchmark tests.
It also runs on the latest Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Some of the new features of the latest Android OS that you will like are Android Pay and Doze.
Android Pay is similar to Apple Pay in which you can set up your debit or credit card information in your smartphone. Instead of swiping your card, you just have to hold your phone next to the contactless POS terminal.
It digitizes and replaces the credit or debit card chip and PIN or magnetic stripe information that is needed in the traditional card swiping.
The Doze is a battery saving function which uses the device’s motion sensors to detect if the phone is not being used or not. If not being used for about 30 minutes, Doze puts the phone to sleep.
This is better than the normal standby mode. The effect is a noticeable longer battery life.
The duration of the battery life can even double based on initial tests.
The battery capacity of the P9 Plus is 3400 mAh which is only slightly lower than the 3600 mAh of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
If the Galaxy S7 Edge can last up to 27 hours of talk time (3G), with the same display size and OS version, we can safely assume that the P9 Plus’ battery life is close to that.
The P9 Plus only comes in 64GB internal storage, unlike the P9 which has 32GB and 64GB variants. Both smartphones can use a microSD card up to 128 GB using the SIM2 slot.
Dual-lens Camera – Better Image Quality Than Most Flagship Phones
Like the P9, the P9 Plus has the most amazing camera which can beat even the other flagship smartphones in capturing quality images.
This is made possible by the dual lenses at the rear side of the P9 Plus. Huawei partnered with Leica, a German camera manufacturer.
Leica is primarily known for their high-quality, lightweight rangefinder cameras.
Each of the two lenses has a 12MP resolution. A dual-lens camera takes two images and combines them to make the best quality image.
It has two sensors, one for RGB and one for monochrome. It is also excellent in capturing images in a low light setting and dimensional phots where the subject is the focus and the background is blurred.
The rear camera has a f/2.2 aperture size, Dual-Led flash, touch focus, face detection, HDR, and panorama features.
The front camera has an 8MP resolution and f/1.9 aperture size. The aperture size is wider than the P9 which means it has better subject focus. If you like recording videos, the rear and front cameras of the P9 Plus can capture them at Full HD (1080p).
Stereo Speakers, Fingerprint Sensors, GPS, and NFC Support
The P9 Plus has stereo speakers, unlike the P9, so it has better loudspeaker sound quality which will allow you more to enjoy watching videos and quality music even without a headphone.
The P9 Plus has fingerprint sensors which you can use to unlock your phones and to securely authorize online mobile transactions.
If you are driving or finding your way to a location, you can use the GPS with Assisted-GPS technology.
It also has NFC support which enables contactless payments with a terminal. It also has a compass, light sensor, proximity sensor, and gyroscope sensor.
Conclusion
The Huawei P9 Plus comes with a super thin and light form even in a metallic body. It has some best unique features such as the awesome dual-lens camera and “Press Touch”.
Smartphones with larger displays must have sharp and colorful displays because it is where they visually stand out. The design is also crucial because they are usually difficult to use with one hand. The processor and battery should be powerful and big enough to accommodate the huge display.
And regardless of the size, we all fancy a good camera. The P9 Plus meets all these criteria for an excellent smartphone.
What do you think of this new smartphone from Huawei? I would love to hear from you.
