Best New Features of Samsung Galaxy S7
What are the amazing new features of the Galaxy S7?
- Water and dust resistant. This is a feature that was in Galaxy S5, removed in Galaxy S6, and now it’s back. It has an IP68 rating which is the highest protection for water immersion and solid particles. You can use the phone up to 1.5 meters underwater for 30 minutes. The dust protection will save you from future repair cost due to dust buildup.
- MicroSD card slot up to 200 GB. This is one of the best features of Samsung phones that is not present in Galaxy S6. It’s a good thing they put it back as well.
- Longer Battery Life. According to Samsung, it can run up to 15 hours of video playback. The battery is still non-removable BUT I really like that they have improved the battery life. It now has 3000 mAH capacity, a decent bump from the 2550 mAH of the Galaxy S6. The average battery life is the only aspect of the Galaxy S6 that frustrates me, so this is really an excellent improvement.
- Fast charging. The Galaxy S7 now supports fast battery charging that will allow you to fully charge in just 90 minutes.
- Faster CPU and GPU. The chipset can either be Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 depending on your region. It has 30% faster CPU and 64% faster GPU compared to the Galaxy S6 series. The Galaxy S6 has 3GB RAM while the Galaxy S7 has 4GB RAM.
- Always-on display. The phone can show the time and date while on standby with a subtle wallpaper. This can drain the battery only up to 1% per hour.
Other features compared to the Galaxy S6
The Super AMOLED display technology from the Galaxy S6 was retained. The display size, resolution, and pixel density (577 ppi) are still the same with the Galaxy S6.
There is also a decrease in the camera resolution from the 16MP of Galaxy S6 to 12MP. But this is not like a downgrade. The decrease in resolution while retaining the same sensor size will allow the camera to let in more light by about 25%, which means better low-light photos and picture quality in general.
When it comes to the design, there are only subtle changes. The Galaxy S7 still has the glass and metal design of the Galaxy S6.
What I like in S7 is they have made the back beveled so it feels better to hold than the Galaxy S6. I think this subtle design improvement is important because compared to the iPhone 6s, the S6 is not too comfortable to hold.

It also has the same display resolution and uses the same Super AMOLED display technology. The pixel density is 534 ppi which is slightly higher than the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (518 ppi).
Compared to the images captured by the Galaxy S6 Edge+, the Galaxy S7 can capture better quality photos in a low-light environment despite the decrease in camera resolution from 16MP to 12MP.
There are also subtle changes in the design. I think the Galaxy S6 Edge+ design is already awesome, so what more can I ask for? I really like the beautiful and shiny glass display and the cool curved edges.
