Huawei Honor 8 VS Huawei P9 and Huawei Honor V8 – Affordable Premium Smartphone!

July 26, 201610:00 am By

Huawei recently released the Huawei Honor 8, a premium smartphone with a cheaper price tag.  There’s a thin difference between this smartphone and  the Huawei P9, the latest flagship of Huawei that was released in April 2016.

Moreover, it is more affordable than the Huawei Honor V8, the larger version that was released in May 2016. So, how is it compared to the Huawei P9, Huawei Honor V8, and the premium smartphones of other brands? Let’s find out.

Huawei Honor 8

Camera: 12MP
Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 950, Quad-core 2.3 GHz + Quad-core 1.8 GHz
RAM: 4 GB RAM (32/64 GB) | 3 GB RAM (32 GB)

Design – Beautiful Glass Front and Rear

Huawei Honor 8The Huawei Honor 8’s front and back are protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a metallic frame.

The 2.5D glass both at the front and back is very impressive. Most premium smartphones stop with a 2.5D front glass only.

I really like the slight curve in the 2.5D glass because it adds more comfort, beauty, and style.

I started liking smartphones with glass designs since Samsung released their Galaxy S6 series. The gloss and premium look from a glass design is really striking and head-turning.

Going back, unlike the Huawei Honor V8 and Huawei P9, the rear does not have the antenna lines which makes the seamless design.

The Huawei Honor V8 and Huawei P9, on the other hand, comes with a metallic unibody.

The display is similar in size to the Huawei P9 which is 5.2 inches. So it can be your alternative from the 5.7-inch Huawei Honor V8 if you don’t like a larger smartphone.

It is only 7.5 mm thin which is a very slim profile for a smartphone. It is slightly thinner than the Huawei Honor V8. Huawei P9 still has the slimmest profile at only 7.0 mm.

When it comes to weight, at 153 g, it is almost as light as the Huawei P9. There are various color choices such as Pearl White, Sunrise Gold, Midnight Black, Sakura Pink, and Sapphire Blue.

Display – One of the Best!

Aside from the display size, the sharpness of the display is the same with the Huawei P9. At only 5.2-inches, you will find it very easy to hold.

With a Full HD resolution and a very high pixel density of 424 pixels per inch, you will certainly like the razor sharp graphics which are very outstanding.

Any smartphone above 400 pixels per inch is super sharp for me because the Retina display of the iPhone is only at 326 pixels per inch.

According to Apple, with the pixel density of a Retina display, individual pixels are already invisible to the human eye at a normal viewing distance.

Huawei Honor 8

The Huawei Honor 8 uses IPS LCD display technology which has excellent viewing angles and color saturation. This technology is also being used in most premium smartphones of other brands like LG G5 and iPhone 6s/6s Plus.

Huawei P9 and Huawei Honor V8 uses IPS-NEO LCD technology which is the evolved technology of IPS LCD.

According to the manufacturer of both technologies, Japan Display, Inc., IPS-NEO LCD has “true-black” appearance for the black color.

Aside from that, they didn’t describe any other main difference in terms of display quality between these technologies so there isn’t much difference between the display quality of the Huawei Honor 8 and Huawei P9.

Processing Power – Another “Almost Huawei P9”

The Huawei Honor 8 features a premium chipset so expect one of the fastest processing power that you can find in a Huawei smartphone.

With a HiSilicon Kirin 950, which is not far from the HiSilicon Kirin 955 of the Huawei P9 in terms of processing power, you can experience a very smooth running of your apps and games.

It has the same graphics processor with the Huawei P9 and Huawei Honor V8 so you can even play heavy 3D games without a problem.

Huawei Honor 8

Just like the Huawei P9, the 3 GB to 4 GB RAM is also huge enough to allow running multiple apps at the same time.

The internal memory can be 32 GB or 64 GB and can be expanded up to 256 GB using a microSD card which uses the SIM 2 slot. So it’s perfect if you have a lot of huge files like movies and captured videos.

It also runs on Android OS 6.0.1 (Marshmallow).

Overall, the processing power is almost the same with the Huawei P9 so it will certainly not disappoint you.

Dual-Camera = Better Image Quality

It has a dual-camera just like in Huawei P9 and Huawei Honor V8 that has a 12 MP resolution, laser auto-focus, and f/2.2 aperture size.

It can also record Full HD videos at 30 frames per second. The front camera, on the other hand, has an 8 MP resolution.

Huawei Honor 8

However, just like the Huawei Honor V8, the Huawei Honor 8 does not have the Leica camera branding of the Huawei P9, so still expect a better image quality in the Huawei P9.

The overall camera quality is the same with Huawei Honor V8, except that the Huawei Honor 8 has a larger pixel size of 1.4 µm which means it can capture better images in a low-light environment.

Other Cool Features – Same with Huawei P9

It has a huge battery capacity of 3000 mAh which is the same with the Huawei P9.

The LTE speed is Cat6 300 Mbps (download) / 50 Mbps (upload) with LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 8(900), and 20(800).

The fingerprint sensor is located at the back and it also features GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS for location technology, Bluetooth 4.2 for your wireless accessories, Wi-Fi, and FM radio.

Like the Huawei P9 and Huawei Honor V8, it uses Type-C 1.0 reversible connector.

Huawei Honor 8, A Cheaper Huawei P9

Huawei Honor 8Huawei Honor 8 is very close, like really close, to the Huawei P9 in terms of display quality, processing power, camera, battery capacity, and other premium features.

It has a very sharp display and one of the best display technology for a mobile device. It has one of the most powerful CPU and the fastest graphics processor of Huawei.

And the dual-camera will certainly produce better images than the camera of the premium smartphones of other brands.

So, it’s definitely a very good deal considering it’s a lot cheaper than the Huawei P9. It is also more affordable compared to the larger Huawei Honor V8.

Overall, the Huawei Honor 8 is definitely worth the price.
